  3. The bttv driver
  4. ===============
  5. Release notes for bttv
  6. ----------------------
  7. You'll need at least these config options for bttv::
  8. ./scripts/config -e PCI
  9. ./scripts/config -m I2C
  10. ./scripts/config -m INPUT
  11. ./scripts/config -m MEDIA_SUPPORT
  12. ./scripts/config -e MEDIA_PCI_SUPPORT
  13. ./scripts/config -e MEDIA_ANALOG_TV_SUPPORT
  14. ./scripts/config -e MEDIA_DIGITAL_TV_SUPPORT
  15. ./scripts/config -e MEDIA_RADIO_SUPPORT
  16. ./scripts/config -e RC_CORE
  17. ./scripts/config -m VIDEO_BT848
  18. If your board has digital TV, you'll also need::
  19. ./scripts/config -m DVB_BT8XX
  20. In this case, please see Documentation/admin-guide/media/bt8xx.rst
  21. for additional notes.
  22. Make bttv work with your card
  23. -----------------------------
  24. If you have bttv compiled and installed, just booting the Kernel
  25. should be enough for it to try probing it. However, depending
  26. on the model, the Kernel may require additional information about
  27. the hardware, as the device may not be able to provide such info
  28. directly to the Kernel.
  29. If it doesn't bttv likely could not autodetect your card and needs some
  30. insmod options. The most important insmod option for bttv is "card=n"
  31. to select the correct card type. If you get video but no sound you've
  32. very likely specified the wrong (or no) card type. A list of supported
  33. cards is in Documentation/admin-guide/media/bttv-cardlist.rst.
  34. If bttv takes very long to load (happens sometimes with the cheap
  35. cards which have no tuner), try adding this to your modules configuration
  36. file (usually, it is either ``/etc/modules.conf`` or some file at
  37. ``/etc/modules-load.d/``, but the actual place depends on your
  38. distribution)::
  39. options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
  40. Some cards may require an extra firmware file to work. For example,
  41. for the WinTV/PVR you need one firmware file from its driver CD,
  42. called: ``hcwamc.rbf``. It is inside a self-extracting zip file
  43. called ``pvr45xxx.exe``. Just placing it at the ``/etc/firmware``
  44. directory should be enough for it to be autoload during the driver's
  45. probing mode (e. g. when the Kernel boots or when the driver is
  46. manually loaded via ``modprobe`` command).
  47. If your card isn't listed in Documentation/admin-guide/media/bttv-cardlist.rst
  48. or if you have trouble making audio work, please read :ref:`still_doesnt_work`.
  49. Autodetecting cards
  50. -------------------
  51. bttv uses the PCI Subsystem ID to autodetect the card type. lspci lists
  52. the Subsystem ID in the second line, looks like this:
  53. .. code-block:: none
  54. 00:0a.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 (rev 02)
  55. Subsystem: Hauppauge computer works Inc. WinTV/GO
  56. Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5
  57. Memory at e2000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=4K]
  58. only bt878-based cards can have a subsystem ID (which does not mean
  59. that every card really has one). bt848 cards can't have a Subsystem
  60. ID and therefore can't be autodetected. There is a list with the ID's
  61. at Documentation/admin-guide/media/bttv-cardlist.rst
  62. (in case you are interested or want to mail patches with updates).
  63. .. _still_doesnt_work:
  64. Still doesn't work?
  65. -------------------
  66. I do NOT have a lab with 30+ different grabber boards and a
  67. PAL/NTSC/SECAM test signal generator at home, so I often can't
  68. reproduce your problems. This makes debugging very difficult for me.
  69. If you have some knowledge and spare time, please try to fix this
  70. yourself (patches very welcome of course...) You know: The linux
  71. slogan is "Do it yourself".
  72. There is a mailing list at
  73. http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#linux-media
  74. If you have trouble with some specific TV card, try to ask there
  75. instead of mailing me directly. The chance that someone with the
  76. same card listens there is much higher...
  77. For problems with sound: There are a lot of different systems used
  78. for TV sound all over the world. And there are also different chips
  79. which decode the audio signal. Reports about sound problems ("stereo
  80. doesn't work") are pretty useless unless you include some details
  81. about your hardware and the TV sound scheme used in your country (or
  82. at least the country you are living in).
  83. Modprobe options
  84. ----------------
  85. .. note::
  86. The following argument list can be outdated, as we might add more
  87. options if ever needed. In case of doubt, please check with
  88. ``modinfo <module>``.
  89. This command prints various information about a kernel
  90. module, among them a complete and up-to-date list of insmod options.
  91. bttv
  92. The bt848/878 (grabber chip) driver
  93. insmod args::
  94. card=n card type, see CARDLIST for a list.
  95. tuner=n tuner type, see CARDLIST for a list.
  96. radio=0/1 card supports radio
  97. pll=0/1/2 pll settings
  98. 0: don't use PLL
  99. 1: 28 MHz crystal installed
  100. 2: 35 MHz crystal installed
  101. triton1=0/1 for Triton1 (+others) compatibility
  102. vsfx=0/1 yet another chipset bug compatibility bit

  105. Default is native endian.
  106. fieldnr=0/1 Count fields. Some TV descrambling software
  107. needs this, for others it only generates

  118. default is 4.
  119. gbufsize= size of capture buffers. default and
  120. maximum value is 0x208000 (~2MB)
  121. no_overlay=0 Enable overlay on broken hardware. There
  122. are some chipsets (SIS for example) which
  123. are known to have problems with the PCI DMA
  124. push used by bttv. bttv will disable overlay
  125. by default on this hardware to avoid crashes.
  126. With this insmod option you can override this.
  127. no_overlay=1 Disable overlay. It should be used by broken
  128. hardware that doesn't support PCI2PCI direct
  129. transfers.
  130. automute=0/1 Automatically mutes the sound if there is
  131. no TV signal, on by default. You might try
  132. to disable this if you have bad input signal
  133. quality which leading to unwanted sound
  134. dropouts.
  135. chroma_agc=0/1 AGC of chroma signal, off by default.
  136. adc_crush=0/1 Luminance ADC crush, on by default.
  137. i2c_udelay= Allow reduce I2C speed. Default is 5 usecs
  138. (meaning 66,67 Kbps). The default is the
  139. maximum supported speed by kernel bitbang
  140. algorithm. You may use lower numbers, if I2C
  141. messages are lost (16 is known to work on
  142. all supported cards).
  143. bttv_gpio=0/1
  144. gpiomask=
  145. audioall=
  146. audiomux=
  147. See Sound-FAQ for a detailed description.
  148. remap, card, radio and pll accept up to four comma-separated arguments
  149. (for multiple boards).
  150. tuner
  151. The tuner driver. You need this unless you want to use only
  152. with a camera or the board doesn't provide analog TV tuning.
  153. insmod args::
  154. debug=1 print some debug info to the syslog
  155. type=n type of the tuner chip. n as follows:
  156. see CARDLIST for a complete list.
  157. pal=[bdgil] select PAL variant (used for some tuners
  158. only, important for the audio carrier).
  159. tvaudio
  160. Provide a single driver for all simple i2c audio control
  161. chips (tda/tea*).
  162. insmod args::
  163. tda8425 = 1 enable/disable the support for the
  164. tda9840 = 1 various chips.
  165. tda9850 = 1 The tea6300 can't be autodetected and is
  166. tda9855 = 1 therefore off by default, if you have
  167. tda9873 = 1 this one on your card (STB uses these)
  168. tda9874a = 1 you have to enable it explicitly.
  169. tea6300 = 0 The two tda985x chips use the same i2c
  170. tea6420 = 1 address and can't be disturgished from
  171. pic16c54 = 1 each other, you might have to disable
  172. the wrong one.
  173. debug = 1 print debug messages
  174. msp3400
  175. The driver for the msp34xx sound processor chips. If you have a
  176. stereo card, you probably want to insmod this one.
  177. insmod args::
  178. debug=1/2 print some debug info to the syslog,
  179. 2 is more verbose.
  180. simple=1 Use the "short programming" method. Newer
  181. msp34xx versions support this. You need this
  182. for dbx stereo. Default is on if supported by
  183. the chip.
  184. once=1 Don't check the TV-stations Audio mode
  185. every few seconds, but only once after
  186. channel switches.
  187. amsound=1 Audio carrier is AM/NICAM at 6.5 Mhz. This
  188. should improve things for french people, the
  189. carrier autoscan seems to work with FM only...
  190. If the box freezes hard with bttv
  191. ---------------------------------
  192. It might be a bttv driver bug. It also might be bad hardware. It also
  193. might be something else ...
  194. Just mailing me "bttv freezes" isn't going to help much. This README
  195. has a few hints how you can help to pin down the problem.
  196. bttv bugs
  197. ~~~~~~~~~
  198. If some version works and another doesn't it is likely to be a driver
  199. bug. It is very helpful if you can tell where exactly it broke
  200. (i.e. the last working and the first broken version).
  201. With a hard freeze you probably doesn't find anything in the logfiles.
  202. The only way to capture any kernel messages is to hook up a serial
  203. console and let some terminal application log the messages. /me uses
  204. screen. See Documentation/admin-guide/serial-console.rst for details on
  205. setting up a serial console.
  206. Read Documentation/admin-guide/bug-hunting.rst to learn how to get any useful
  207. information out of a register+stack dump printed by the kernel on
  208. protection faults (so-called "kernel oops").
  209. If you run into some kind of deadlock, you can try to dump a call trace
  210. for each process using sysrq-t (see Documentation/admin-guide/sysrq.rst).
  211. This way it is possible to figure where *exactly* some process in "D"
  212. state is stuck.
  213. I've seen reports that bttv 0.7.x crashes whereas 0.8.x works rock solid
  214. for some people. Thus probably a small buglet left somewhere in bttv
  215. 0.7.x. I have no idea where exactly, it works stable for me and a lot of
  216. other people. But in case you have problems with the 0.7.x versions you
  217. can give 0.8.x a try ...
  218. hardware bugs
  219. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  220. Some hardware can't deal with PCI-PCI transfers (i.e. grabber => vga).
  221. Sometimes problems show up with bttv just because of the high load on
  222. the PCI bus. The bt848/878 chips have a few workarounds for known
  223. incompatibilities, see README.quirks.
  224. Some folks report that increasing the pci latency helps too,
  225. althrought I'm not sure whenever this really fixes the problems or
  226. only makes it less likely to happen. Both bttv and btaudio have a
  227. insmod option to set the PCI latency of the device.
  228. Some mainboard have problems to deal correctly with multiple devices
  229. doing DMA at the same time. bttv + ide seems to cause this sometimes,
  230. if this is the case you likely see freezes only with video and hard disk
  231. access at the same time. Updating the IDE driver to get the latest and
  232. greatest workarounds for hardware bugs might fix these problems.
  233. other
  234. ~~~~~
  235. If you use some binary-only yunk (like nvidia module) try to reproduce
  236. the problem without.
  237. IRQ sharing is known to cause problems in some cases. It works just
  238. fine in theory and many configurations. Neverless it might be worth a
  239. try to shuffle around the PCI cards to give bttv another IRQ or make
  240. it share the IRQ with some other piece of hardware. IRQ sharing with
  241. VGA cards seems to cause trouble sometimes. I've also seen funny
  242. effects with bttv sharing the IRQ with the ACPI bridge (and
  243. apci-enabled kernel).
  244. Bttv quirks
  245. -----------
  246. Below is what the bt878 data book says about the PCI bug compatibility
  247. modes of the bt878 chip.
  248. The triton1 insmod option sets the EN_TBFX bit in the control register.
  249. The vsfx insmod option does the same for EN_VSFX bit. If you have
  250. stability problems you can try if one of these options makes your box
  251. work solid.
  252. drivers/pci/quirks.c knows about these issues, this way these bits are
  253. enabled automagically for known-buggy chipsets (look at the kernel
  254. messages, bttv tells you).
  255. Normal PCI Mode
  256. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  257. The PCI REQ signal is the logical-or of the incoming function requests.
  258. The inter-nal GNT[0:1] signals are gated asynchronously with GNT and
  259. demultiplexed by the audio request signal. Thus the arbiter defaults to
  260. the video function at power-up and parks there during no requests for
  261. bus access. This is desirable since the video will request the bus more
  262. often. However, the audio will have highest bus access priority. Thus
  263. the audio will have first access to the bus even when issuing a request
  264. after the video request but before the PCI external arbiter has granted
  265. access to the Bt879. Neither function can preempt the other once on the
  266. bus. The duration to empty the entire video PCI FIFO onto the PCI bus is
  267. very short compared to the bus access latency the audio PCI FIFO can
  268. tolerate.
  269. 430FX Compatibility Mode
  270. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  271. When using the 430FX PCI, the following rules will ensure
  272. compatibility:
  273. (1) Deassert REQ at the same time as asserting FRAME.
  274. (2) Do not reassert REQ to request another bus transaction until after
  275. finish-ing the previous transaction.
  276. Since the individual bus masters do not have direct control of REQ, a
  277. simple logical-or of video and audio requests would violate the rules.
  278. Thus, both the arbiter and the initiator contain 430FX compatibility
  279. mode logic. To enable 430FX mode, set the EN_TBFX bit as indicated in
  280. Device Control Register on page 104.
  281. When EN_TBFX is enabled, the arbiter ensures that the two compatibility
  282. rules are satisfied. Before GNT is asserted by the PCI arbiter, this
  283. internal arbiter may still logical-or the two requests. However, once
  284. the GNT is issued, this arbiter must lock in its decision and now route
  285. only the granted request to the REQ pin. The arbiter decision lock
  286. happens regardless of the state of FRAME because it does not know when
  287. FRAME will be asserted (typically - each initiator will assert FRAME on
  288. the cycle following GNT). When FRAME is asserted, it is the initiator s
  289. responsibility to remove its request at the same time. It is the
  290. arbiters responsibility to allow this request to flow through to REQ and
  291. not allow the other request to hold REQ asserted. The decision lock may
  292. be removed at the end of the transaction: for example, when the bus is
  293. idle (FRAME and IRDY). The arbiter decision may then continue
  294. asynchronously until GNT is again asserted.
  295. Interfacing with Non-PCI 2.1 Compliant Core Logic
  296. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  297. A small percentage of core logic devices may start a bus transaction
  298. during the same cycle that GNT is de-asserted. This is non PCI 2.1
  299. compliant. To ensure compatibility when using PCs with these PCI
  300. controllers, the EN_VSFX bit must be enabled (refer to Device Control
  301. Register on page 104). When in this mode, the arbiter does not pass GNT
  302. to the internal functions unless REQ is asserted. This prevents a bus
  303. transaction from starting the same cycle as GNT is de-asserted. This
  304. also has the side effect of not being able to take advantage of bus
  305. parking, thus lowering arbitration performance. The Bt879 drivers must
  306. query for these non-compliant devices, and set the EN_VSFX bit only if
  307. required.
  308. Other elements of the tvcards array
  309. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  310. If you are trying to make a new card work you might find it useful to
  311. know what the other elements in the tvcards array are good for::
  312. video_inputs - # of video inputs the card has
  313. audio_inputs - historical cruft, not used any more.
  314. tuner - which input is the tuner
  315. svhs - which input is svhs (all others are labeled composite)
  316. muxsel - video mux, input->registervalue mapping
  317. pll - same as pll= insmod option
  318. tuner_type - same as tuner= insmod option
  319. *_modulename - hint whenever some card needs this or that audio
  320. module loaded to work properly.
  321. has_radio - whenever this TV card has a radio tuner.
  322. no_msp34xx - "1" disables loading of msp3400.o module
  323. no_tda9875 - "1" disables loading of tda9875.o module
  324. needs_tvaudio - set to "1" to load tvaudio.o module
  325. If some config item is specified both from the tvcards array and as
  326. insmod option, the insmod option takes precedence.

  332. Supported cards: Bt848/Bt848a/Bt849/Bt878/Bt879 cards
  333. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  334. All cards with Bt848/Bt848a/Bt849/Bt878/Bt879 and normal
  335. Composite/S-VHS inputs are supported. Teletext and Intercast support
  336. (PAL only) for ALL cards via VBI sample decoding in software.
  337. Some cards with additional multiplexing of inputs or other additional
  338. fancy chips are only partially supported (unless specifications by the
  339. card manufacturer are given). When a card is listed here it isn't
  340. necessarily fully supported.
  341. All other cards only differ by additional components as tuners, sound
  342. decoders, EEPROMs, teletext decoders ...

  569. Support for the Leadtek WinView 601 TV/FM
  570. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  571. Author of this section: Jon Tombs <jon@gte.esi.us.es>
  572. This card is basically the same as all the rest (Bt484A, Philips tuner),
  573. the main difference is that they have attached a programmable attenuator to 3
  574. GPIO lines in order to give some volume control. They have also stuck an
  575. infra-red remote control decoded on the board, I will add support for this
  576. when I get time (it simple generates an interrupt for each key press, with
  577. the key code is placed in the GPIO port).
  578. I don't yet have any application to test the radio support. The tuner
  579. frequency setting should work but it is possible that the audio multiplexer
  580. is wrong. If it doesn't work, send me email.
  581. - No Thanks to Leadtek they refused to answer any questions about their
  582. hardware. The driver was written by visual inspection of the card. If you
  583. use this driver, send an email insult to them, and tell them you won't
  584. continue buying their hardware unless they support Linux.
  585. - Little thanks to Princeton Technology Corp (http://www.princeton.com.tw)
  586. who make the audio attenuator. Their publicly available data-sheet available
  587. on their web site doesn't include the chip programming information! Hidden
  588. on their server are the full data-sheets, but don't ask how I found it.
  589. To use the driver I use the following options, the tuner and pll settings might
  590. be different in your country. You can force it via modprobe parameters.
  591. For example::
  592. modprobe bttv tuner=1 pll=28 radio=1 card=17
  593. Sets tuner type 1 (Philips PAL_I), PLL with a 28 MHz crystal, enables
  594. FM radio and selects bttv card ID 17 (Leadtek WinView 601).
