  2. Special inodes
  3. --------------
  4. ext4 reserves some inode for special features, as follows:
  5. .. list-table::
  6. :widths: 6 70
  7. :header-rows: 1
  8. * - inode Number
  9. - Purpose
  10. * - 0
  11. - Doesn't exist; there is no inode 0.
  12. * - 1
  13. - List of defective blocks.
  14. * - 2
  15. - Root directory.
  16. * - 3
  17. - User quota.
  18. * - 4
  19. - Group quota.
  20. * - 5
  21. - Boot loader.
  22. * - 6
  23. - Undelete directory.
  24. * - 7
  25. - Reserved group descriptors inode. (“resize inode”)
  26. * - 8
  27. - Journal inode.
  28. * - 9
  29. - The “exclude” inode, for snapshots(?)
  30. * - 10
  31. - Replica inode, used for some non-upstream feature?
  32. * - 11
  33. - Traditional first non-reserved inode. Usually this is the lost+found directory. See s_first_ino in the superblock.
  34. Note that there are also some inodes allocated from non-reserved inode numbers
  35. for other filesystem features which are not referenced from standard directory
  36. hierarchy. These are generally reference from the superblock. They are:
